The Wichita Eagle from Wichita, Kansas (2024)

WWW.KANSAS.COM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2011 THE WICHITA EAGLE say man's son, nephews robbed him A 52-year-old man was beaten by his son and threatened by his nephews Saturday in the 600 block of North Poplar, near Central and Grove, police said. Sgt. Steve Yarberry said the man's 26-year-old son and 23- and 27- year -old nephews were invited into the home, where the son demanded money, punched his 1 father in the face and grabbed him by the neck. The nephews waved handguns, Yarberry said. The father ran out of the house with all three men following him.

A neighbor asked what was going on, and one of the men pointed a handgun at him and told him to go back inside. The men left in a 1991 white Chevrolet Caprice with tag 136 CJB, Yarberry said. People came out with their families for free food and music and to play bingo. Information for laidoff workers was available, and tables were blanketed with fliers urging leaders to get the country back to work. The federation recognized two workers, Roger Norton of the Service Employees International Union, and Brent Lewis of United Teachers of Wichita.

Norton works for the city and was instrumental in river cleanup efforts, Lowen said. Lewis, Lowen said, illustrates that people want to work. Lewis was a Spanish teacher at North High School. When his job was eliminated, he began teaching financial literacy at the school, retooling his skill set. Switching gears helped save his job, Lewis said.

Lowen said there are other Kansans willing to do whatever it takes to keep their jobs. Fittingly, Norton couldn't attend Saturday's picnic because he was working, Lowen said. The government contended in its lawsuit that the juice concentrate is an unapproved and misbranded drug because the winery claims it is used to treat diseases such as the flu and cancer.

Dara Corrigan, the FDA's associate commissioner for regulatory affairs, said in a news release that products with unapproved disease claims are dangerous because they may cause consumers to delay or avoid legitimate treatment. "If you can't prove it with FDA-sanctioned human trial studies, you cannot say anything about any benefits you might get from the food you eat," Brewer said. "It is really in my a First Amendment thing. As a manufacturer, we cannot say what it can do unless we give multimillion-dollar studies to the FDA to prove exactly what we are talking about." An affidavit filled in federal court contended the FDA sent Wyldewood Cellars a warning in 2006 after receiving a consumer complaint over the claims. The FDA said the company continued to make the same claims on its website and at its retail outlets.

Brewer contended that when the winery got that letter, he changed the label. He said he hadn't understood that he also needed to change the advertising. He blamed bad advice. "We thought we were doing everything right, but the FDA says no, we are not," Brewer said. Help When You Need It Is your parent or loved one becoming more dependent on your care?
